Exploring Roatan: Your Ultimate Guide
Welcome to Roatan, a hidden gem in the Caribbean where turquoise waters meet lush tropical landscapes. Just off the coast of mainland Honduras, but truly a world away. Whether you're seeking relaxation on pristine beaches or thrilling adventures underwater, Roatan offers something for everyone. Here's your comprehensive guide to where to stay, what to do, and our favorite places to explore on this vibrant island paradise.
Where to Stay
Roatan boasts a variety of accommodations, from luxurious resorts to charming boutique hotels and cozy beachfront villas. Here are a few recommendations to suit different tastes and preferences:
Kimpton Hotel, Roatan: Ideal for beach lovers with its soft white sands and crystal-clear waters. The newest oceanfront resort offers upscale accommodations with amazing access to the world’s second largest reef. The hotel also has 2 and 3 bedroom options as well.
Ibagari Boutique Hotel: An adults only hotel located between West Bay and West End that has an on-site restaurant and dive shop.
Lawson’s Rock / Sandy Bay Private Villas: There are dozens of private homes available in the Lawson’s Rock and Sandy Bay areas. The reef at Lawson's Rock is located a bit offshore, so be prepared for a long swim or opt for a kayak to reach it. The wall off Lawson's Rock is awe-inspiring, plunging hundreds of feet and adorned with vibrant coral formations, offering unparalleled snorkeling and diving experiences. With visibility often exceeding 100 feet, it's a diver's paradise in Roatan.
What to Do
Snorkeling and Diving: Roatan is renowned for its spectacular coral reefs and abundant marine life. Don't miss:
Anthony's Key: Explore the vibrant reef and swim with dolphins at Anthony's Key Resort for an unforgettable experience. While it's an amazing adventure, it can also be a bit unnerving as the water is often murky, and the dolphins swim towards you at incredibly high speeds.
West End Wall: Dive into the depths of the West End Wall, known for its dramatic drop-offs and diverse marine species.
Sandy Bay & Lawson’s Rock: Snorkel in the calm waters of Sandy Bay and encounter colorful fish and coral formations.
Roatan offers very reasonably priced dive packages, including scuba diving certifications. I highly recommend West End Divers. Our 11 year old daughter completed her referral dive certifications with West End and their dive instructions were absolutely fabulous!
Island Adventures
Zip-lining: Experience the thrill of zip-lining through the jungle canopy with panoramic views of the island and Caribbean Sea.
Gumbalimba Park: Visit this eco-park to interact with monkeys, parrots, and other native wildlife in a lush tropical setting.
Carambola Botanical Gardens: Discover the island's flora and fauna while strolling through this beautiful botanical garden.
Beach Relaxation
Half Moon Bay: Relax on this tranquil beach with shallow waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
Little French Key: Enjoy a day of sunbathing, water sports, and beachside dining on this private island retreat. Check the cruise ship schedule to avoid the crowds.
Camp Bay: Camp Bay on Roatan is a secluded paradise, boasting pristine white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, perfect for a tranquil escape. For the more adventurous travelers, Kitesurf Roatan is located at Camp Bay.
Favorite Places
Lawson's Rock reef in Roatan is a stunning underwater haven located just offshore, accessible via a long swim or kayak. The reef features an incredible wall that drops hundreds of feet, covered in vibrant coral and offering unmatched snorkeling and diving with visibility often exceeding 100 feet. There was a resident Bridled Burrfish under the dock that we were lucky enough to observe multiple times during the week.
Dedicated to preserving the island's marine ecosystem, the Roatan Marine Park is a must-visit for diving enthusiasts and nature lovers. Learn about conservation efforts and participate in guided dives to discover the rich biodiversity of Roatan's underwater world. Adventurous divers can take the Lionfish Hunter Workshop to legally spear lion fish.
Immerse yourself in the island's Garifuna culture at Punta Gorda, a historic village known for its traditional music, dance, and cuisine. Visit local artisans, try authentic Garifuna dishes like hudut (fish stew with coconut milk), and experience the vibrant rhythms of traditional drumming and dancing.
